Following four albums rootedin Greek mythology, composer and founderJonathan Hohl turnsto another profound source of inspiration: J.R.R. Tolkien and more specifically his exploration of mortality and immortality. The elves, in Tolkien’s legendarium, refer to death as the “Gift of Men.” They regard mortality not as a curse, but as a unique gift grantedto humankind. This paradox offers a strikingalternative to the Western perception of death as purely tragic, presenting it instead as coveted and desirable. In the wake of the passing of Jonathan’s grandfather, this idea became the emotional and conceptual foundation of White Shores.
